The Attempt to Paganize Christianity

The attempt to paganize Christianity is nothing new. Indeed, it is an old tactic of the powers of darkness. To say that it has not been successful in its attempt is to fail to see the factual evidence in denominations and individual bodies professing the Christian faith. The fact that such bodies who declare the faith have not been secularized, paganized, or altered to fit the pattern of this world order, is to confess ignorance of the true faith and to deny its reality.

Many today are so much like the world that there is really no distinction. [ Look at contemporary ‘Christian’ music such as CCM or ‘holy hip-hop’. ] They have adopted the standard of morality in harmony with the world. Mainline denominations have so altered their stand against what the Bible clearly condemns as sin, that they should take down their banner as followers of Christ. They have not known Him nor His teachings. They have become so harmonized with the world that only the name Christian is left, all doctrine and factual evidence is gone.

The powers of darkness may well corrupt denominations, local bodies who profess to be Christian, but such can never paganize true Christianity, only what is so professed.

Christianity, the rule of God in Christ, came into a pagan world, a Cainite world order that is without God. Since the fall of Adam Satan has sought to use this tactic of divide and conquer. He seeks to move men away from the purity of the faith by substituting what is but the spirit of antichrist which is ‘instead of’ Christ or Christianity. Anti is a Greek preposition meaning instead of and therefore a substitute for the real. So men who deny the Christian faith seek to ever substitute the false for the real. Thus, the purity of the faith, believed or practiced, is compromised with what is false though presented as the pure thing in individuals and denominations.

A little history of religious movements may help. We could go all the way back to the worship of God on the part of Abel and Cain to distinguish between the true and the false with the religious substitutes of Cain. Such would be too extensive for this time. Yet, the tactic has never changed. Mohammed sought to synthesize Judaism with Christianity, to create an admixture of the old covenant with the new. Such was impossible. The Old cannot be the New anymore than the parent can be the offspring.

Talmudic Judaism, the result of the Babylonian exile, present at the time of Jesus, was a corruption of the true faith of the Old Testament saints such as Moses, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob with all of the prophets, with the paganism of Babylon. With so much of the false, the truth of Jesus as Messiah was obliterated for men who were blinded by sin. The Talmudic faith was a corruption of the Old so wedded to the paganism of Babylon that it no longer could represent the faith of Abraham and other Old Testament saints.

Today, the polytheism of the old world is on the rise and has so corrupted much of that which goes under the banner of Christianity, that such is little more than a worldly order in religious garb. It has the form but not the substance of the true. The most dangerous and deceitful tactic of Satan is that which contains an essential element of truth. The element of truth attracts and confuses the weak only so they may finally be engulfed by the big lie.

The effort of the feminist movement, which attacks the biblical role of women and the family by debunking a woman’s devotion to home and children to be nothing less than a sacrifice and worthless effort, is no different from the efforts of the worldlings who have invaded the local churches debunking the need of a final authority resting in the Bible and its teaching. For such, doctrinal truth is not needed for either the family or the body of Christ.

The consequences have been devastating to the family and the body of true believers. America is left without the very essentials for a stable family and society in both cases. Families are corrupted and destroyed and the nation’s future is bleak at best. The mainline denominations are torn asunder with heresy. Division on whether to invite the immorality of the world’s citizens to join and carry the banner of Christian faith, all foreign to the mandate of Scripture, tears apart denomination and local fellowships. All a part of the tactic to paganize what is declared to be Christianity, that is, to make it compatible with the order of man and his world.

Christians who are prone to such seduction should recall that our Lord declared to the pagan, Pilate: “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then my servants would be fighting, that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but as it is My kingdom is not of this realm.” John 18:38. Jesus made a clear distinction of those who were citizens of this world and those who are citizens of His kingdom: And He was saying to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.… You are doing the deeds of your father….  You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:23, 41, 44.

The Christian is in this world but not of its order. There is no way to harmonize the spirit and practice of this world with the spirit and practice of those in Christ, and yet we see it continually in modernized, contemporary ‘worship’ services with its praise bands and hip-hop and such. Jesus, in John 17:15, 16, makes clear that it is not His prayer to the Father that the Christian be taken out of the world. He desired that they be kept from the power of the evil one. He said of them: “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.”

The powers of darkness may well corrupt denominations, local bodies who profess to be Christian, but such can never paganize true Christianity, only what is so professed. This does not mean such bodies should not be on guard against this enemy. He is described as “a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.” The admonition to be awake and alert is ever needed and to deny any space for the devil in the individual life, the lives of the body of believers, or denominations. Such alertness is critical to the purity of the Christian faith, it’s doctrine and practice.
