Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. – Philippians 2:5-7
We are to have the mind and thinking of Christ Jesus, who made Himself a man of no reputation, indeed, made Himself nothing.
What does social media do for you? For us?
I’m just asking.
Jesus gave up riches (2 Cor. 8:9), heavenly glory (John 17:4), independent exercise of authority (Heb. 5:8; John 5:30; cf. John 5:19; 14;24.)
Does social media teach, exemplify or help Christians take the form of a servant, or does it tempt us to self-exaltation and self-glory?
Keep in mind, it’s not the thing, but the heart, not what goes in but what comes out of a man that defiles him.
I sense a need for much, much grace.
Food for thought.
Depends on how one defines “social media”. Anything on this Earth can – and will be – abused. That don’t make it wrong, merely points out our need for Christ even in the small things. That’s how deep sin is ingrained in our souls.
Are we talking Facebook? I have seen very little if any true good come out of that, and a whole world of bad. Not saying God can’t use it for good, but between the narcissism, slander, time wasting, idle chatter, worldliness, illicit relationships and addictive potential, I don’t see much of eternal value in it.
totally depends… on the heart… i have made a few (not tons but a few) really close good friends that i would never have even met outside social networking.
everything can be used for good or evil, it’s what’s in a man’s heart that makes it [social networking in this case] one thing or another
How different is blogging? My FB wall has become the go-to place for many friends looking for Scripture-based edification and encouragement since I repost quotes from Spurgeon, Ryle and other old guys and link to other blogs — including yours! A blog is visited only by those looking for it. A FB post is viewed in the news feed of all the poster’s friends (believers and nonbelievers alike, unless they take action and hide the posts).
I am in agreement with all of you. Social Media is merely an outlet that allows the content of a person’s soul to be revealed. Blogging is not much different from FB. Then again, telephones, letters, smoke signals… all can be used to glorify one’s self.
That being said, we do have an elevated requirement for proper conduct with electronic media. Anything we post, type, tweet, or skype is permanently available to the world to be used against us and, greater still, against the Kingdom.
Social media should be used wisely. It can be a good tool.
