Not sure where this was meant to go, but it hit a nerve with me.
Several years ago my husband & I moved to another area across the state – we decided not to hook the tv up. Not to cable, nothing at all. There is not direct internet access where we live and we decided not to pay for satellite or any other source. We live in a place where radio reception is very limited also – so needless to say it’s very quiet and peaceful.
Having lived without a television for over 4 years now, we have noticed a few things when we are around places that have their tv on.
First of all tv has gotten much more worldly and much louder. Things that used to be only for late night tv is 24/7 now.
People are addicted to television, seriously. How many times have we heard people, say “I just turn it on for the company”…
People have a hard time tuning out the television/commercials when the tv is on.
When people visit us we have had a few freak out because there was no tv hookup. We only have a choice few vhs/dvd movies, Bible teaching/preaching, Christian music dvd’s to view. We have literally had people that visit us regularly try to pay for us to get service so they will have it when they come. No way.
We have noticed that Christian teachers will occasionally refer to tv shows, assuming that everyone watches tv and everyone watches those shows.
We generally keep the fact we don’t have tv hookup to ourselves, as to say this outloud to people – Christian or not – will guarantee that we are marked as being a little too strange, crazy or legalistic.
We aren’t either of those things. We don’t care if other people have tv’s we just don’t want it in our home. It’s a form of a long term fast, a fasting from the world and technology.
People that come to our home to stay, when they get over the shock of the no tv hookup end up telling us they get the best sleep at our home. That our home is peaceful, quiet and they have relaxed really well for the first time in ages.
TV is not our enemy, but we decided it’s not going to be our companion either. We have chosen to make God the center of our home, and for us no tv was part of our decision.
Bewitched Americans? perhaps. We won’t go there, but it’s a powerful influence we don’t want.
