I’m sorry, I tried to rid myself of my biases concerning Rick Warren as I listened to this sermon but wow…. I’m sickened by this sermon, it deeply saddened . I’m disappointed with Piper’s decision to invite him, but I do understand, more or less, why he did it. To test the man. And I’m sorry but Mr. Warren failed miserably. I can’t remember the last sermon I’ve heard with more verses thrown out of their context and twisted to say what the “preacher” wants it to say. You may think I’m be harsh, but God’s holy Word is not something to be tossed around like a hot potato. Preaching is serious business not a game. Sorry, actually, preaching is no business at all, it’s a calling; that which I firmly believe this man was not called to do, at least not by the One True God. Nor should he be allowed to continue standing behind a pulpit claiming to teach what God has said in His infallible trustworthy Word about His plan of redemption. The Gospel presentation was so brief and lacking. The old, “Jesus loves you this much,” (arms spread out like a cross) gospel presentation is not the gospel at all. It only deals with man and it makes Christ out as a weak and pathetic guy to be pitied, just waiting for us to accept him hopeless and lonely. NOT THE GOSPEL. I’m sorry, I would like to be more kindhearted on this subject, but I’m more and more convinced this man is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. With carnivorous wolf’s amongst us we should not have mercy in allowing them to fill our pulpits and lead the sheep astray. May God’s bride be pure and blameless, a chaste virgin for the great consummation with her Bridegroom, Jesus, in the new heavens and the new earth. To God be the glory.
taylor,
I don’t think you are harsh at all. Imagine what it will be like standing before God answering for a life lived twisting scripture and deceiving people into believing they are in charge of their spiritual outcome…
Truthy
I agree with what you say Truthy. Every time I listen to this “pastor” I’m infuriated by his Scripture twisting and the way he continually takes individual verses and rips them out of their context. I’m dismayed that there were so many “pastors” barking like seals and clapping their hands together at the conclusion of this talk. It seems to me there should have been more, pointing out the errors of what Warren said here, including his lack of any reference to the Gospel. I heard Law, law and more law with one reference to Christ on the cross shedding his blood because he loves me so much? He has clearly shown his stripes here and yet everybody just appears to just sit there taking in the show. If he believes in total depravity, he certainly never preaches it.
I was further irritated by his thoughts on feeding the sheep as though that isn’t even part of his job as a pastor when Christ said in his Word, “Feed my sheep”. Trust me Rick, the sheep are perfectly capable of hearing Bible correctly preached and then incorporating what is properly taught into their lives. The Holy Spirit is quite capable of pricking the heart of a Believer, causing them to repent from their sin.
I find it very convenient that Piper continues to be unavailable and the only way that he will be taking any comments on his poor choice of speakers will be through e-mail. I can’t wait until next year when this entire circus will be moved to Saddleback. Ugh!

that was actually under the section titled: Never Let Up On Learning
so much is wrong with Warrens little speech.
Clearly this is more propaganda for shaping the future
socialist Catholic/ Protestant/ Baptist Church
I think the Lord Jesus said it best when He talked about the social work of feeding the poor. It was not going to do any good to feed someone who would eventually die in their sins. They needed the Bread of Life!!!
So, so , so true. All of our good deeds done in self righteousness are filthy rags in his sight.
I don’t agree with Warren about not studying scripture we do need that. But in James 2 we still need works to prove our faith. James 2:16, “And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
We do need works but that is not the point being made here by the posters. The point is that works without adhering to God’s word is magnanimous self righteousness. Warren seems to have created a “new” religion. Spin the Bible until it says what we would rather it have said (fleshly) and cover this with loads of good works… Roman Catholicism at its finest!
Look, there are folks who come out of the 3-ring circus church movement once they are given eyes to see and ears to hear. As a discerndamentalist, my goal is to sound the alarm in case people are receiving their ears.
so true truthinator-
and some of us have come out of Catholicism. like myself.
and are very, very disturbed by the language Rick Warren uses
concerning everything that’s important.
And his receiving the right hand of fellowship by Piper recently is very disturbing and grieving to me as an x catholic who loves the one true gospel.
The thing I don’t get is all the praise that John Piper and the others give Rick Warren and everyone else rebukes Warren. There was a discussing following Warren’s message with John Piper and three others and they gave Warren high marks. Go figure.
I also do not get it. I believe a generation is being led astray by Warren and his homies. Also, look at the people he professes that he supports in the ministry…it’s a bunch of emergents, newagers, and RC mystics. Hang on folks, the ride may get very bumpy before the end…
The ride IS getting bumpy alright. And some of us have fallen right off of the church wagon as it started down a broad road after leaving the narrow road.
I see it as leaving Babylon because we are called by God to do so. If anyone like Piper hasn’t heard the warning call yet, I can’t explain that.
I only know that from what it looks like to me, that Piper and his ‘homies’ are doing what God has allowed.
This isn’t the first time God has used men in the public spotlight to see who really loves Him and who really loves His truth.
