The Lynchburg News and Advance (LNA) reported yesterday on Ergun Caner and his address at a Bristol, Virginia prayer breakfast where he continues to defend his “misstatements,” while denigrating bloggers, particularly bloggers who pressed the issue regarding Caner’s honesty concerning his claims.
According to Caner, internet bloggers “are just frustrated people in their basements.” Caner goes on to lump every American pastor into the same position he finds himself in:
“Every pastor in America, ask them if you can go through 200-odd hours of your sermons. Would they find where you said your kids’ names wrong or dates wrong? Yeah, of course. You just smile and move on.”

BRISTOL — Controversial professor and evangelical minister Ergun Caner was unapologetic Friday, defending his record while criticizing Islam, his critics and the media.
Caner, the former dean of the Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in Lynchburg, spoke to a crowd of about 500 at Bristol’s 12th annual prayer breakfast at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites.
Earlier this year, a controversy erupted in the media and on the Internet concerning some of Caner’s claims about being a teenage Muslim who was trained as a terrorist, and comments he made during speaking engagements.
“We saw it (controversy) coming. My brothers and I have been dealing with it for years. This just happened to bounce big, and I paid no attention. News means little to me, and the Web is — well, bloggers for the most part — are just frustrated people in their basements,” Caner said after the program.

As I sit here in my basement, being the Thoeology cop in training, I have to say that ole Ergun has placed his large foot into his even larger mouth yet again. What a BS artist! This guy is apparently a total ego maniac. Righteous indignation from someone who made ‘self-contradictory’ statements and was only brought to justce (well, sort of) because Dr. White and other bloggers did what Liberty didn’t have the guts to do? Pal-leeeeeese!
I can’t tell you how far my BS detector needle goes way into the red whenever I read or hear from this guy. It astounds me that this doofus has an audience. Yes, I said it. Someone needs to.
Caner’s hook in Liberty University and the Falwell’s was his claim to be a Muslim trained terrorist that converted to Christianity. The Falwells love that kind of story as it is good propaganda for their point of view.
I live in Lynchburg, VA and I can tell you that now Liberty University is basically trying to distance themselves from Caner. Their sponsorship of Caner has made them look like fools. They have in essence “demoted” him and the only classes he teaches are on-line thereby to restrict his direct contact with students and lower his profile. Liberty just wishes he would go away. Unfortunately he has no where to go at the moment.
Caner doesn’t mind telling a lie if he thinks it will further his religious view point. He thinks that if it gets more Christian converts then that is the greater good. But when you tell a lie to further you faith, that doesn’t make you more faithful, it just makes you a liar.
There are lots of religious zealots out there just like Caner. They can justify all the lies they tell. No problem
This man is so SHAMEFUL. Lynchburg must really publicly disown this guy to preserve their own credbility.
Rebuking a brother is scriptural. Publicly decrying him is not. There is nowhere in Matthew 18 that prescibes…” if the brother will not hear you…go to the Media”. The Gospel must be foremost. Consider this, even if Caner is deemed a liar, who has caused the greater harm to the spread of the Gospel? Caner? or those who choose to publicly shoot arrows at him instead of winning the Lost. The Answer is both are wrong, some on purpose some on accident and a little bit of both probably.
THE POINT IS THIS!
Stop furthering the black eye on Christianity by this nonsense. Why are we insistent on shooting the wounded when we should be rescuing the perishing.
How about we all agree to move on and Let the Lord be the Judge, his judgmwnt is perfect ours is not.
