For a short time, I was receiving free books from various publishing companies in exchange for reading them and posting reviews. Generally speaking, I’m not doing that anymore, and here’s why.
Someday, I’m going to die, and I just don’t have the time or interest to read the garbage (give me a stronger word) that is being published by most “Christian” authors and publishing companies.
Blunt? Sure it is, and I meant for it to be. If you’re a writer, focus on the truth, if you have it, and not what sells.
If we post any book reviews here, it is most likely – not necessarily however – from someone who is already gone to be with the Lord.
I’ve been pondering along the same lines, having signed up Thomas Nelson after seeing the link on your site. I choose carefully the books I agree to review – but wonder about the goodness of reading critically stuff that rails against the Kingdom.
But then I see you’re a Razorback and, being an OSU Cowboy myself, wonder if I can even agree with you on anything!
Probably the best book review I have read in a while
The current trend of publishing is to publish all and everything as fast as you can and put some king of Christian label on it to sell it to the thousands of pop-Christians. There are SO many books that are of such high quality, high spiritual value, I find it very hard to set aside time just to read a pop-Christian book (though I have read what I would consider to be the “better” pop-Christian books as a way to keep my mind on reading but on less difficult theology, but even that I don’t seem to have time for any more either).
I just received a copy today of a book I am looking forward to reading. Henry Scougal’s “The Life of God in the Soul of Man” and I don’t think he wrote this for the profits he received. It is out of print, out of copyright, but being printing “in the public domain” (try Amazon for a copy).
I wish current authors would give us less pop and more truth. Nice post. -S
The cess pool called ‘Christian publishing’ is a putrid mix of quick SAND and lye/lies.
The sheep know to keep away from certain death.
We are resting on the ROCK of God’s Word.
So don’t sweat about doing much in the way of reviews.
I do believe though that there is a need for reviews of the old, good stuff.
Because many like myself were involved in churches that never let it be known there
even was such good stuff. And we were NEVER warned to keep away from the ‘Christian
bookstores’ and they don’t have the good stuff.
So a certain segment of the Christian public need to be told of the works that actually are
glorifying to God.
The reviews of those old, good works would be most helpful to people like myself.
thanks.
Love this!! I love the ‘old’ books too and usually avoid current ‘Christian’ authors.
Thanks for this post!
I’m for the old stuff. They’re the best.
I starting to read the old books. They are MUCH Better!!
