Songwriters: Green, Keith Gordon
My eyes are dry, my faith is old
My heart is hard, my prayers are cold
And I know how I ought to be
Alive to you and dead to me.
But what can be done for an old heart like mine?
Soften it up with oil and wine
The oil is You, your spirit of love
Please wash me anew
With the wine of your blood

Despite being in Charismatic churches for most of my early life, the ministry of Keith Green was my only consistent exposure to the gospel. His music got me through some very dark times. I had been hearing his music but never paid attention to who he was until Randy Stonehill covered Your Love Broke Through and Steve Camp covered Asleep in the Light. I went bought his entire anthology. After a particularly bad departure from the Charismaniacs I read his biography and a book of his sermons… earth-shaking stuff.
He had bad theology (Finney) in his early years, but my understanding is he came around to grace alone before his tragic death. I was only seven years old when he died and didn’t become a Christian until about 15 years after that, but I was enamored by his music from the first time I heard it and to this day consider “Grace By Which I Stand” as one of my very favorite songs, especially as I’ve grown in my faith.
Amen, Tony.
Even after 30 years as a believer, I am simply unable to listen to Keith Green’s music without weeping. I can’t wait to thank him.
Keith Green brings me closer to the Lord than any other music i’ve ever heard. What a blessing we were left with, with his Spirit-filled, truthful and passionate music!
What a blessing! I heard that a movie is being made of his life. I can’t wait to see it. I loved his biography “No Compromise” Thanks for posting this.
Yea, KG is to Christian music what Paul Washer is to preaching. When Keith sang, he was singing to and about God. I’m sure he’s still singing but now he is backed by an amazing choir…
