Timothy Morgan over at Christianity Today liveblog is now reporting:
This afternoon, Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia released by email this statement about Dr. Ergun Caner, president of the university seminary:
“Liberty University does not evaluate personnel based upon blogs. However, in light of the fact that mainstream media have recently raised questions, the Provost of Liberty University is appointing a committee to look into these matters. A Decision as to the efficacy, or lack of same, is expected by June 30.”
One week ago, ChristianityToday.com published online a report highlighting extensive questions about Dr. Caner’s background, speeches, and comments. Bloggers have alleged that Caner has knowingly deceived the Christian community about his Muslim background… (Online source)

How many of us predicted it would come to this? This is a shameful example of the celebrity of church instead of celebrating the reason for church. We serve a mighty and Risen Savior who never embellished his resume, never lied, and never behaved with extreme arrogance.
I’m glad that something is being done, but heaven help Liberty University if they dare to cover up the truth. God forbid.
This is long overdue. I pray that they will be honest in their investigation. This mess is profaning the name of Christ.
I had to laugh a little when I read the Liberty spokesman saying while Liberty does not respond to bloggers, enough mainstream media have raised questions … Give me a break. Maybe if Liberty policed their own personnel against Biblcal standards the bloggers would not have to! Also, where do they think the mainstream media got their 411?
I do not believe any respectable blogger has tried to force Liberty to do anything other than what they should have done of their own volition. Why an organization such as Liberty would disregard and turn a deaf ear to info THEY should have known better than us raises even more questions.
Maybe the bar height for selecting a president of their seminary should be based upon high Biblical standards and not resume-building and supposed cultural relevance… Anyone else feel like this?
I absolutely agree. It’s not as if scripture doesn’t give us specific guidance regarding our leadership.
When I read what Dr. Towns had said, I had to bite my tongue not to be disrespectful. What I heard was, as long as Dr. Caner shares my theology, it doesn’t matter if he is a liar.
It was inevitable that this would come out for all the world to see, but apparently Dr. Caner has such a large ego, he really felt he could do whatever he wanted and never be called on it.
But what is even more shocking are the people who want to cast blame onto people like Dr. White or Mohammed Kahn. They weren’t the people who told the lies. I hate to say it, but Dr. Caner must be living in some alternate reality. He has known since 2006 what Dr. White does as part of his ministry. How did he think for a second, he could pull off this sham and not get caught?
The Proverbs speak to us so eloquently at times: “He that troubles his own home shall inherit the wind, and the fool shall be a servant to the wise of heart” Proverbs 11:29
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall”. Proverbs 16:18
I’m going to be in prayer so that I can have a ‘right response’. The world will be watching.
