Dr. Piper will be hosting an “Ask Pastor John Live” session via Desiringgod.org tonight at 7.pm CT. where he will , perhaps, maybe, hopefully address the issue of inviting Rick Warren to speak at the DG 2010 National Conference.
Tune in and ask your questions here.
Pingback: Rick Warren Speaking at John Piper’s “Desiring God” Conference « Slaughter of the Sheep
Ken Silva has the 9 minute video from last night posted at Apprising.org I turned it off when Piper emphatically proclaimed that he thought Rick meant it when he started the PDL with “It’s not about you.”
I don’t see how anyone could believe that statement reflects Warren’s theology if they’ve read either of his purpose-driven books or listened to him in myriad forums these past several years. Would Piper accept T.D. Jakes if the Potter’s House had a good statement of belief?
Since Al Mohler, Sproul, Chan will also be at the conference speaking are you all going to disassociate with these men also?
I listened to the WHOLE video and agree with Piper on secondary separation.
It would appear that Jesus would not make the cut with reformed as he associated with whores, thieves, ruffians and generally the lower elements of society. This after being rejected by the religious and intellectual.
Correct theology without love is what? nothing. Lane Chaplin refusing to recommend Piper over this is putting is just wrong. Are we to separate from everyone who does not believe just as we do on Limited Atonement? Separation over sin, yes. This is not sin and the calls for Piper to “repent” are wrong.
Our WHOLE LIVES are to demonstrate theology not just our minds/voices. It is as if Reformed believers have not let their theology reach down to their hearts, it stays in their heads. It is good news for all of us, Christ in me should be wholly transformative and be evidenced by my love for ALL.
Hans,
I am afraid you just do not get it. When you say,
” It would appear that Jesus would not make the cut with reformed as he associated with whores, thieves, ruffians and generally the lower elements of society. This after being rejected by the religious and intellectual. Correct theology without love is what? ”
you reveal that you miss the point entirely.
Jesus associated with these people but DID NOT BECOME LIKE THEM. He challenged them to embrace Him and leave their sin. Please read the Bible without a post-modern, post-Christian filter.
Dude, accepting heresy and heretical teachers in the name of love and brotherhood is found nowhere in the Bible. Man up and read the word of God …
man up? dude? you do not know me, my history, my beliefs in total, my experience and yet you tell me man up and accuse me of heresy? based upon a brief comment in blog.
you have made my case for lacking love…
And ever since I heard James White ridicule Adrian Rodgers I have had a gnawing that a theological camp that is just plain mean and demeaning at times needs great discernment in its adaptation. For without love, just a clanging gong. Greatest command was to love the Lord God, not condemn those whom we deem heretical (as I have now been)
Hans,
Associated with folks with the aim of proclaiming Truth to them is the RIGHT thing to do – that was what the Lord did. Christ Jesus did not prop up false teachers as featured speakers when He fed the 5,000 – that is what Piper is doing.
Others who participate need to be careful about the implied endorsement of the other speakers they provide.
The main responsibility is on the host – John Piper. He is the one giving a platform to a long-term professing man-pleaser.
Exactly! Manfred nailed it. Piper is hosting the shindig. Sproul and Mohler probably had no idea Warren was on tap when they agreed to pontificate. The responsibility is on Piper for this decisio to add a little leaven to the lump.
Now, the thing about endorsement here is huge! What does it say for Warren to appear at such a function? It says that Piper endorses him!!! It could say nothing else. I hate this because of what it will do to young people who are not yet mature enough to understand why Christians cannot associate intimately with quasi and/or almost Christians.
Will Sproul and Mohler appear afterall? I wonder what they think of this? Maybe we will find out soon…
JT,
You are being a little harsh, dude. Look, Rick Warren is only a little heretical when compared to heretics like McLaren, Pagitt, and Bell. Afterall, a little poison added to a milkshake will not hurt you, right? A little bit of dog poop added to brownie mix will still make appetising brownies, right?
The above was absurd for the purpose of revealing the absurdity in what Piper is saying to justify Warren’s inclusion. You are one the mark, as usual, JT. The apostle’s would NOT have stood along side a slightly heretical teacher much less a scriptural spinmeister par excellence.
Hans,
Biblical love is what the Commandment is about – not romantic “love” that western, Roman, and Greek culture are all about. Love without Truth is worthless. Biblical love will not be without Truth and its bedrock. It is not love to give false teaching a pass – that’s love of man rather God.
Manfred,
Inviting Warren is not giving false teaching a pass, IMO. I clearly understand the difference between eros and agape love. It is not correct to present truth without love either, and that is my whole point. This and so many reformed blogs are after the truth and seem to think they have it cornered.
Great men (yes I said it great men of God) have differed on secondary issues and continued in fellowship. I am NOT a Warren fan, however I look forward to hearing him at this conference.
No one will receive the truth if presented in arrogance, condescending manner. Think of Truthinator talking to me as one trying to correct a errant thought…”man up” “read the bible” that would not work because it is rude. And love is not rude.
Hans,
I will have no comment on what Truthy wrote. Salvation is not a secondary issue and this is where the divide between the biblical Truth of election and redemption of dead sinners as opposed to the Pelagian based view of universal atonement and the free will of man to choose God.
Christ and His apostle were not gentile with those who taught or accepted such doctrines of demons.
Warren is fruit from the tree of Robert Schuller – he should not be propped up as featured speaker by any man of God. It’s hateful to the body of Christ for John Piper to do this, just as Rick Warren’s life’s work is hateful to the body of Christ.
How man presents the Gospel is important, as our lives are to be lined up with our professed beliefs. Yet it is not up to man as to whether or not another will hear Truth. The Holy Spirit gives a man ears to hear – not man and his “kind words”. Satan has kind words in the garden – that was not love, though it was perceived by Eve as kind.
I did not accuse you of being a heretic. Please read posts thoroughly before firing off a response. I said to accept false teachers and heresy in the name of ‘love’ is not found in the Bible. You are accused or not based entirely upon your beliefs and actions.
The ‘man up’ is colloquial talk for ‘do what’s right’. Read the Bible should be obvious. It does not teach anything that you claim it does in the previous post.
This is called tough love. I would rather try to point someone in the right direction even if it assaults their ego than to pat them on the back and usher them to hell saying, “peace, man, I love you” ! That’s all.
Can you please provide me, any of you, with PROOF that Rick is heretical?
Thanks
Brothers, watch this video from the Davos Economic Forum; the Faith and Modernization Panel featuring Rick Warren “representing” so called (non Roman Catholic) “Christianity”. This should help us see what he is all about.
RW sat there while the Muslim, Catholic and Jewish leaders said that religions must coexist; common ground must be found. RW said the future of the world is “religious pluralism”. This is a Freemason doctrine. He implied that “people of faith” are people of all religions. He said “we” (the world) cannot solve the world’s problems (the 5 Giants) without “people of faith and their religious institutions”. He implied all people of faith and all religious institutions in the world. He boasted of his membership in the CFR. He promoted the 3 Legged Stool of Government, Business and “Faith” sector (anyone religious) to work together to solve the problems.

I hope you brothers can see it now.
Someone please send this on to John Piper. Thank you.
God have mercy.
RW’s job is to bring the visible Evangelical Church in agreement with and in cooperation with the one world religion which will compliment the one world government of the nwo. The only thing is, there is no exclusivity in this, there is no true Jesus Christ, no Gospel allowed, no evangelizing, no Truth, only common ground. This is all Freemason (luciferian) doctrine. It is part of satan’s “Plan”. Deception abounds because the enemy is in the house, leading astray undiscerning (unregenerate?) Christians, recruiting them to serve the god of this world and the kings of the earth, to be volunteer (“church”) laborers to help create this one world religion which is the luciferian “Plan” for the world. The goal is not to solve poverty and all the rest of the PEACE plan– the goal is to use this as a ruse to foment the Hegelian Dialectic and satanic deception to create the one world religion where compliance is mandatory. Praise to Jesus the Lord.
RW: “Enough Interfaith Dialogue , I’m interested in interfaith Projects!” He boasts, “We brought in 3 Imams, we brought in 3 Catholic priests, we brought in 3 Evangelical pastors, and we brought in 3 Rabbis and we said, “What can we do about AIDS?’ And we started on some common ground on those issues. What can we do that we all care about? ”
then he goes on to brag about his PDL book that it is the highest selling English book in history (and he forgets to add– The Bible — when he remembers that– and laughs and makes a joke of that.
Anyways, God bless you all dear saints.
Is it just me or does anyone else wonder if the Christians will be missed if( for you reformed folks) or when the rapture occurs? I can foresee business as usual here on earth with only a few people missing here and there. Purpose-driven pastors will twitter each other saying, “Please pray for sister Josephine because her cousin dissappeared without a trace…”
If such a thing as the rapture would happen one day, will anyone notice? I should think the one-world ecumenical church of the apostacy would be glad to have us gone…no more online discenrment of their evil deeds!
Truthy, out…
