I have mixed feelings about this. I don’t know all the background, but I know Mark Driscoll is doing some questionable things. Has John Piper spoken to him privately first? I mean John publicly dissed the guy…and I’m not saying he doesn’t have it coming to him…but has John raised concerns about him first privately. I dunno.
Praying there is repentance and that those who look to these men pray for the Lord Jesus to open their eyes — men that “contexualize scripture” (is not God’s Word always sufficient?) , men that condone mystic prayer practices in their Acts 29 Network (and “Resurgence” with it’s advocation of guru Richard Foster– note: Amos 3:3 and 2 Cor. 6:15) and men who promote Sex Talk and Toys on their church’s website, Mars Hill and even go on tour with this private stuff.
May the Lord Jesus reveal His Truth, amen. Stand for Jesus, Look to the Savior, first of all..not men.
The more I see of Marky Mark Driscoll, the less I like it… I know that sometimes Driscoll sounds like he may be legit (rapper lingo) but a little truth mixed with a little error unfortunately results in total error. Driscoll still does the cursing, coarse talking, and crude sex talk stuff…right? If so, he is still disqualified from being a pastor. Read it and weep in Ephesians 5.
By the way, if anyone wants to understand why the conversation in the video went as it did, go over to newswithviews and read Paul Proctors’ article titled “Today’s New Churches :Beer, Bikes and Brawlers. I think he says it all. He mentions M. Driscoll and Acts 29.
I have a hard time reconciling this video with the John Piper I thought I knew of. I remember reading the book “Desiring God” when I was first awakened to my sinful state and was desperately seeking God’s forgiveness through Christ. How I admired John Piper and longed to have the kind of relationship with the Lord that he wrote about. Could these video segments be taken grossly out of context? On the surface, at least, it seems John is acting foolishly, almost giddy. It reminds me of the behavior of one who is intoxicated. It’s painful to watch someone who is representing Christ to the world act in such an undignified manner, especially in a public setting. Please tell me there has been something exculpatory omitted in the editing…
I’ve been saying for years now that John Piper is dangerous because he is the link between Reformers and the Emergent Church Movement. He also offers cussing Ted Tripp (king of the S word) and heretic Douglas Wilson (Federal Visionist) to his followers.
This IS “Christian Hedonism” folks.
Its not cute, its SICK and UNHOLY. We’re to be growing in Christ-likeness, not worldliness.
“The reason false teachers are dealt with publicly is that their teaching is public. One does not need two or three witnesses or a private meeting to determine if a public teaching is Biblical or not. Everyone who heard them knows what they believe and teach. At issue is whether the teaching is Biblical. False teaching damages the church, and it cannot be tolerated.
Teachings that are published far and wide do not need two or three witnesses; everyone can see what is being taught for themselves. These teachings must be judged to be biblical or unbiblical. Those who bring false teaching should be publicly corrected. If they continue to bring false teaching and disregard the faith once for all delivered to the saints, they should be
considered wolves and the flock must be guarded from them.”
Also, consider the follow and that they were letters written to be read publicly (caps for emphasis only):
Gal 2:13 And the rest of the Jews acted HYPOCRITICALLY along with him, so that even Barnabas was LED ASTRAY by their hypocrisy.
Gal 2:14 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas BEFORE THEM ALL, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
1Ti 5:20 As for those who persist in sin, REBUKE THEM IN THE PRESENCE OF ALL, so that the rest may stand inFEAR. 21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality.
I’m glad the makers/editors of this video don’t read my blog. I’m sure they would have lamented the inherent apostasy found therein. While I think Matthew 7:1-5 is quoted way too often and usually out of context, I think it applies here.
Should Driscoll be called out for his profanity and some of his sermon topics? Definitely (and several have done so). It should be remembered that any form of discipline/confrontation should be done with grace and humility.
Too many folks confuse Emergent w/ Emerging. Wearing casual clothes to worship does not make one a heretic, nor does riding a motorcycle. Drinking alcohol? There’s a lot of discussion on the topic, particularly among Baptists, but evangelical Christians as a whole were not opposed to alcohol consumption until the prohibition/abstinence movements emerged on two continents during the 1800s. Again, believing it is okay to drink a beer does not make one a heretic.
I praise God for the life and ministry of John Piper. I praise God for the God-centered approach which many have taken in every area of life as a result of Dr. Piper’s labors. I praise God for the missionaries which have been raised up. I praise God for the sin and temptation which has been fought against. When a pastor is being used by God to send out laborers and to help Christians act like saints, then one should thank God. When a pastor has a foul mouth and discusses inappropriate topics from the pulpit, then one should correct him in a spirit of love and humility, and pray for him to be used in the way he is using Dr. Piper in advancing sanctification.

This is offensive to those in Christ Jesus. What IS this?
Driscoll yesterday:

Here are the roots of where these men are coming from:

What on earth was this supposed to be all about? (???)
Why is it, that a guy such as John Piper, does so much associating with Mark Driscoll. I think it is too bad. Unless he is abmonsihing him.

That was strange, just strange. I hope that most of it was a result of “creative” editing.
sigh
Driscoll appears to be still infected with the emergent virus.
The more I hear from Piper, the less regard I have for him.
Why do pastors think they need to be “relevant”, etc.?
Hardly worth a comment. But I am sure that it is relevant to the culture. Ya think???
By the way, if anyone wants to understand why the conversation in the video went as it did, go over to newswithviews and read Paul Proctors’ article titled “Today’s New Churches :Beer, Bikes and Brawlers. I think he says it all. He mentions M. Driscoll and Acts 29.
I think someone cut up some video clips, combined them and added some effects. I’m not sure what it proves or attempts to illustrate.
Definitely some “creative” editing that really serves no purpose.

Found this very confusing. Confusion does not come from God.

Dealing with public pastors publicly:

Bob DeWaay points out at http://cicministry.org/commentary/issue94.htm :
