“Is 1 John 5:1 relevant to the discussion of regeneration and faith? It surely is, even if many in evangelicalism today refuse to go deep enough into the text to discover that fact. A study of 1 John 5:1, 1 John 2:29 and 1 John 4:7, in light of Calvary Chapel’s Brian Brodersen’s comments.”

This is complex, deep and difficult. I am just a regular guy – but i do have a post graduate degree. Maybe is I listened a number of times. Any way to make it simpler for us lay people?
Hmm… This is hardly complex, I can understand what he is saying even though I don’t understand NT Greek.
And though Mr. White is not exactly a devotionalist, my eyes get always wet when I hear him to reason from the Scripture these great truths. Glory to God!
Thank God for James White!!
Brian McLaren: “The Bible is unclear, who can know what it means?”
I really appreciate James White…he is teaching me how to read and study the word…also how to listen to those who are “teachers”.
Brian Brodersen uses his own interpretation of John 3:16 to refute what he calls personal interpretation of 1 John 5:1! I don’t know Greek, but I know that the Bible declares God’s Truth about Himself and about me. I was dead in sin, Christ raised me to new life and imputed His righteousness to me, serving as my sacrifice for the debt I could not pay. I know that people who interpret the Bible to raise man and lower God are wrong!
I’m with KShirley – Praise God for men such as James White!
I am impressed with White and with all who do proper exegesis. I have feared the Calvary Chapel model of ‘doing church’ might be a little pragmatic at best and somewhat EC at the worst. What do you guys think about CC? Locally, we have a CC where the senior pastor does not have seminary training… !
Disclaimer: Seminary training is not necessarily good training in all cases but, in general, training in the fundamentals of preaching and studying scripture in order to preach correctly is a pretty good thing.
What do you exegetes think?
It is rather unfortunate that many in the Calvary Chapel movement speak with disdain about traditional seminary training (as well as those who are monergistic). They seem to equate all seminaries with those liberal seminaries that are pumping out heretics left and right. There are many excellent seminaries that hold to the Reformation truths still existing today: Westminster Theological Seminary, Covenant Theological Seminary, Western Seminary (Oregon), Gordon-Conwell, Reformed Theological Seminary and others…
Calvary Chapel pastors are typically required to go to the CC Bible College or their school of ministry. I went for a few semesters. A person can definitely be edified there. However, one is steeped in synergism and taught by pastors who have no formal seminary training. One of the great things about a good biblical Seminary is that you will be challenged in regards to your biblical understanding, and by scholars too! Not so at the CC Bible colleges. If anything, CC has become increasingly antagonistic toward anyone representative of a monergistic view of salvation. It is really sad because they are causing divisions within the Body of Christ.
Let us pray for our friends and brethren in CC.
