“You shall not commit adultery.” – Exodus 20:14 (ESV)
Introduction
I. Because the family is the foundation of a God-ordered society, the family is the point of the devil’s most vigorous assault.
II. The institution of marriage is fundamental to more than just the family. It is the basis for human society and the vehicle for mankind to realize God’s purpose.
Exposition with Application
You shall not commit adultery
I. The seventh commandment is concerned with protecting marriage.
Those in positions of authority are responsible to God for enforcing this commandment.
II. Marriage is a sacred covenant before God.
Next to the covenant with Christ to be your Savior, there is no covenant more sacred.
III. Marriage is between one man and one woman. God made one woman, Eve, for Adam.
The Bible condemns same gender marriage with the ultimate judgment – the death penalty.
IV. The essence of the marriage covenant is keeping a promise. Keeping promises is the basis for all human society.
The person who is unfaithful to his marriage promises, cannot be trusted to keep any promises.
V. The importance of marriage transcends the family and the social structure. God ordained marriage prior to man’s fall into sin, It is not good that man should be alone. Gen 2:28
Marriage is the normal state of affairs for men and women.
VI. Marriage is not primarily about family or children, neither is it primarily about mankind’s need for love and communication. Marriage is about mankind fulfilling its creation mandate. Gen. 1:28
Since man’s fall into sin, the creation mandate finds its fulfillment in the advancement of Christ’s kingdom.
VII. When the focus of marriage is shifted away from mankind’s responsibility to God, it undermines the concept of living responsibly.
If a person has no responsibility to God, nor to a marriage partner, then he has no responsibility to anyone but himself.
Application
I. God’s sovereignty over every aspect of His creation is absolute. This is the comfort of the born again believer and the basis for the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Man’s greatest freedom and happiness derives from submitting to God’s authority.
II. Man will either live under the dominion of God or under the dominion of sin. The unsaved man seeks autonomy, which brings him under the dominion of sin, instead of freedom. This always results in tyranny.
When a culture destroys the biblical concept of marriage, it is an act of the ultimate self-destruction. It destroys the purpose for man’s existence.
III. Goodness, blessing and life come only through faith in Christ, submission unto His Lordship, obedience unto His Law.
