Comfort In The Sovereignty Of King Jesus

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. – Matthew 28:18

..He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords – I Titus 6:15

Our Lord, shortly before His ascension to the right hand of our Father, made this remarkable statement after His mediatorial work on behalf of His people. A people who had no hope of being reconciled to the Father apart from Jesus who became a propitiation for our sins.

In Psalm 24, we have a glimpse of the reaction of the angels themselves upon His arrival at the gates of glory…nothing short of absolute wonder!

Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle!
Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah – Psalm 24:7-10

Our Lord found the gates of heaven shut , yet because of His shed blood for the redemption of our sins, having been made our propitiation, having received the wrath of the Father in our stead, He demands entrance, and for the first time in all eternity, a man entered the gates of glory! This God-man, Jesus, to whom the Father had now given all power, all authority, in heaven and on earth!

For the true Christian, this is a great comfort, isn’t it? I had to remind myself, yet again, of this glorious truth, and I must do it often.

You see, each morning, we wake up to an avalanche of news, with the bad seemingly outweighing the good every time. No surprise, we live in a cursed world, where sin has left nothing untouched by it’s corrupting influence. It can become quite disheartening at times, particularly when we allow ourselves to forget that “Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.” (Proverbs 30:5, ESV). His word proves true, it’s been tried, proven true, every time!

John Gill has rightly said:

The whole of Scripture is pure, free from all falsehood and error; coming from the God of truth, who cannot lie, and therefore called “the Scriptures of truth”: every promise is pure as well as precious, made without dissimulation, faithfully performed, and all yea and amen in Christ; every doctrine is pure, free from the mixtures and inventions of men; the sincere milk of the word; consistent and all of a piece, not yea and nay; and tending to promote purity of heart and life; wholesome words, and doctrines according to godliness.

In proverbs 8:15, 16, Jesus, who is wisdom personified, says:

By Me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just; by Me princes rule, and nobles, all who govern justly.

And what of those who rule unjustly? They are accountable, and will answer to God, who reigns by His own authority! There can be only one, final, ultimate authority, and that One is King Jesus. All others rule and operate governments by derivation. God reigns from His own authority, kings and Presidents derive their authority from God. He raises them up, and puts them down (Psalm 75:6,7).

Beloved, our Lord Jesus Christ has not resigned His throne, much less His authority and power of all things, both in heaven and on earth. He has not abdicated His position. He is King now, He reigns right now, over all.

As John Weaver has so aptly put it:

God Almighty has not given over His earth nor His people to a handful of senseless bureaucrats to trample under their feet or to do with as they please. God has not given over His people to be destroyed by those who despise His glory, hate His law and seek to destroy His church. God is still on His throne! God is God! – (The Christian And Civil Government)

Amen! What a comfort!
