John Eidsmoe: Do Lutherans Support Homosexual Clergy?
John Eidsmoe, of Morallaw.org has written an insightful post on the recent upheaval in the ELCA, and makes more than a point that, in spite of the message of the media, not all Lutherans support the decision to support the ordination of homosexual clergy….
On 21 August 2009 the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) voted in convention to accept the ordination of practicing homosexuals. The resolution states, “Resolved that the ELCA commit itself to finding a way for people in such publicly accountable, lifelong, monogamous, same-gender relationships to serve as rostered leaders of this church.” The action raised a storm of protest both within and without ELCA; one ELCA pastor said he would remain on the ELCA clergy roster “at least for the next few hours.”
The secular media generally reported this action as though ELCA represents Lutherans as a whole rather than just one synod…
