Last Week Highlights (9/5)

1) A Conversation With Francis Chan, Mark Driscoll & Joshua Harris (video) – Sanctification comes through simplicity, poverty and suffering? That’s interesting. Do one of these guys believe that? Am I the only one who thinks this conversation is just plain weird?

2) An LDS View On Glenn Beck & The ‘Restoring Honor’ Rally – Greg West, an LDS Church Examiner sheds some light on Glenn Beck’s dedication to the cult of Latter-Day ‘saints’and the deception many Christians are either ignoring for the sake of unity in conservative politics, or out of simple lack of knowledge that Mormonism is, indisputably, hellish doctrine.

3) Glenn Beck – America’s New Worship leader? (video) – Todd Friel of ‘Wretched’ doing one of the things he does best.

4) An African-American Icon Speaks Truth to the Lincoln Cult – “Lincoln is theology, not historiology. He is a faith, he is a church, he is a religion, and he has his own priests and acolytes, most of whom have a vested interest in [him] and who are passionately opposed to anybody telling the truth about him.”

5) Something Better Than BBQ (video) – I’m Southern, and very much so at that – no apologies. Even if you are not blessed in that particular way, you’ll enjoy this little documentary on Southern culture and the Gospel. This is an inspiring story!

6) You’re not Islamaphobic? (video) – A terrorist leader speaks of the ‘virtues’ of using Anthrax on Americans. Todd Friel & ‘Wretched’.

7) A Nation Ruined By Rights – Dr. H. Rondel Rumburg writes the introduction to a reprint of R.L. Dabney’s classic, The Anti-Biblical Theory of Rights. In Dr. Rumburg’s words: “Even though first written in July 1888, the principles Dabney discloses are an index to the state of things today. In a day when we hear so much about rights and entitlements, Dr. Dabney deals with responsibilities for our actions and duty towards God.”

8). The Original ‘Burn The Quran’ Day (video) – This September 11th, a church in Florida is protesting the growing influence of Islam by offending 2 billion people. Specifically, they’re staging a “Burn the Quran” Day. But is this the first day of its kind? In fact, is today’s Qur’an the Qur’an that Muhammad intended his followers to have? Let’s take a look at the evidence!

9) Life In The Bean Field – (A look at 2 Samuel 23:1-12) “Today, we are called to engage against the enemy wherever we are. The location and circumstances will vary, but the call to war remains for each of us. Mortification of sin, defense of the faith against false teachings, battle after battle, day after day. All who name the name of Christ Jesus as Lord and Master must take our stand in some way today.”

10) Are Worldly Interest Causing You To Sin? (video) – Courtesy of Cross TV,  Mark Kielar warns professing Christians to steer clear of worldly interest (even permissible ones) to avoid falling into a lack luster devotion to Jesus Christ!

11) James Montgomery Boice: Whatever Happened to God? – In any discussion of reformation in doctrine one must come to the realization that the real problem of our time is that there is hardly any doctrine at all to reform. So when we talk about reformation we must focus on a recovery of theology, period.

12) Remembering Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

13) Are You Doing God’s Will or Your Own? (video) – Paul Washer

The Bible A Living Book

A.W. Tozer:

The Bible will never be a living Book to us until we are convinced that God is articulate in His universe. To jump from a dead, impersonal world to a dogmatic Bible is too much for most people. They may admit that they should accept the Bible as the Word of God, and they may try to think of it as such, but they find it impossible to believe that the words there on the page are actually for them. A man may say, “These words are addressed to me,” and yet in his heart not feel and know that they are. He is the victim of a divided psychology. He tries to think of God as mute everywhere else and vocal only in a book.

Remembering Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Remembering Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones David Martyn Lloyd-Jones (20 December 1899 – 1 March 1981) went “to go away from home out of the body, and to come home to the Lord” (1) 29 years ago today. J.C. Ryle, in his work “Christian Leaders Of The 18th Century” asked an important question regarding the great evangelists before his own time: “Who were the men that revived religion in England a hundred years ago? What were their names, that we may do them honour? Where were they born? How … Read More

A New Launch

From TwoCoppercoins:

We know that to be truly saved from the future wrath of God, there is only one solution – faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

That salvation requires regeneration, a complete and sole act of God the Holy Spirit. Yet after this regeneration, how are we to grow in our devotion and love to Jesus? Is it by acquiring biblical knowledge or by experience in the faith, both? What else?

The life, death, burial, resurrection and current reign of Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ – and our lives.

This is Two Copper Coins, my two cents. Welcome.

A Friday Farewell To Twitter

Many of you know by now that “5ptsalt” has left Twitter, and I did so for a solid variety of reasons. I’ll post on that later. But for now, let’s just make it formal. No regrets on my part, that’s for sure:-) Oh I’ll be around, in some form.  Oh man, I’m already gone….

P.S. Ignore the song line about having the key…I don’t need the email. Thanks.

Measuring Our Love For God

J. Austin Taylor:

True saving faith rests on the certain foundation of known, revealed doctrinal teachings and claims of Scripture, and the work of Christ Jesus on the cross is the main. The atonement is the subject of the corpus of the Bible. One who has no desire to study, contemplate and exalt the great work of limited redemption completed by the Lord Jesus Christ –I would think – wants nothing to do with Him.

How Can A Young Pastor Preach The Gospel Every Week?

In this interview with Bryan Chapell, that’s pretty much the question asked.

It is an interesting video. It also dawned on me while watching that many young pastor’s need to keep something in mind: Don’t focus on all “the problems of..” questions. Just don’t. In seminary, that’s what many hear and are trained to recognize. The problem of evil, the problem of this and that. Just stop that. I know, your professor’s drilled it into you. Many times, they are experts at giving you problems to solve and exceedingly weak in giving you solutions.

It’s not your fault.

The biblical approach to preaching the Gospel in every sermon is to focus on the solution, not ‘the problem of..’ whatever. The solution, of course, is the atoning work of our Lord Jesus Christ. Presenting the problems of man in light of judicial guilt is, of course, important, never neglect that. However, if you remain generally “problem-centered” in your preaching, you may find yourself squeamish when it comes to being dogmatic when needed, and dogma, my friend, is a good thing. If you can’t be dogmatic about anything, your people will suffer because you were weak and undecided about basic truth. May it never be!

The Highest Thought

John Broadus:

I remember reading a few years ago the story of a party of Hindus, who were traveling along one day, and one of them was stricken down and fell by the way. The other natives looking carelessly at him went along in their selfish fashion, but a missionary stopped by the poor man and kneeling by him said, "What is your hope for eternity? Have you any hope for eternity?" And feebly, with dying breath, the dusky native gasped, "The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin. ‘Where did you learn that?" the missionary asked. But he could tell no more and died. In the bosom of his garment the missionary found one leaf out of the New Testament in the man’s own language, and there were the words that had struck into the soul of the man, the words that had helped him, living and dying-the words of our text today. "The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."

Ah! my friends, amid all the blessings of this great country, the light of science and the light of literature, amid all the nobleness and real sweetness of what we call culture, amid all the blessedness of Christian homes and Christian society, there is no higher thought for you and me than that uttered to the missionary as he knelt by the poor Hindu’s side. Let us take those words as ours for life, and for death, and for-ever: "The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."

- John A. Broadus, The Necessity of the Atonement

You’re NOT Islamaphobic?

Little Lloyd Missional Boy

Preach on

“It’s true! It’s true I tell ya! Beginning this Sunday, they want us to sing all five verses of the hymn – and no more contemplative prayer! They want real worship! What we need now is to become missional, and plant churches of our own design and liking!

Low On Provisions

John Flavel:

I am afraid, Christian, you misreckon yourself when you think your provision is almost spent, and that you have a great way to travel. You think you have many years to live, and nothing to live upon; it may not be half as many as you suppose. In this be confident: if your provision is spent, either fresh supplies are coming, though you see them not from where, or you are nearer your journey’s end than you reckon yourself to be.

Life In The Bean Field

lentils Today I stepped outside to enjoy the coolness of the morning and there is not a cloud in the sky. It is quiet and the day has begun in a spectacular way. Simply gorgeous. The only thing missing is a bluebird on my shoulder. Cats rubbing on your ankles is affectionate and nice I suppose, but, just once, I’d like to try the whole bluebird on my shoulder thing.

Especially on mornings like this one, it’s easy to forget, at least temporarily, that we are engaged in a spiritual war. Today, we are called to engage against the enemy wherever we are. The location and circumstances will vary, but the call to war remains for each of us. Mortification of sin, defense of the faith against false teachings, battle after battle, day after day. All who name the name of Christ Jesus as Lord and Master must take our stand in some way today.
